"How do you sleep?" is a new song and music video by Ryan Edwards. It's a song, it's a question, it's a challenge. While those of us lucky enough to have a place to call home can look forward to sleep being a safe, calm, rejuvenating experience, there are others in our midst for whom the night is truly terrifying.
Points For Purpose was set up by Dave Drury in September 2016, a big-hearted man from Sydney who discovered that people could make a big difference to those in need by simply using their excess loyalty points. He set about distributing donated sleeping bags to homeless people around Sydney.
In February 2017, one of the earliest recipients of a sleeping bag was stabbed to death, and upon hearing this tragic tale, Ryan wrote "How do you sleep?"
Featuring Lily-wai on guest vocals, this song is equal parts lullaby and lament. It shines a light on the small things most of us take for granted, comparing and contrasting with the life of a homeless person.
The song was recorded in Wellington during a very wet February, with instrumentation being added by renowned sound-track composer Stephen Gallagher. The finishing touches were added by Ryan's long-time producer Asa Bennett in London.
Ryan Edwards is a singer songwriter who captures moments in time like a master photographer. He sees the small things which make a story so compelling. Need. Vulnerability. Hope. His songwriting, his raw, versatile vocal style and his musicality gives the listener front row seats in these stolen moments.
He has a lightness of touch and a turn of phrase to transport you from a carefree sun-kissed summer dune to the darkness before a stormcloud unleashes its wrath. But it is his ability to see moments of naked truth that stands him apart. This vision has enabled him to write songs about people enduring some of life's most difficult journeys.
A family battling the merciless Huntington's disease; the loneliness of parents watching their premature babies clinging to life in an incubator; the unending blackness of depression, and most recently, the nightly struggle faced by people with no place to call home...
Innocent & Wise is a modern-day love story dressed up in yesterday's clothes. It's about values that we're not seeing much of these days: Understanding. Honesty. Patience. Respect. Resilience. This is a step back to a simpler time, when we were able to see the world in a more gentle way.
"When I heard you were coming around to my house, I got dressed up in my father's clothes.
He was something special in his heyday. I wish I could climb into old photos."
